STEGGCAL (Egg shell grit)

Product description
Organic grit from carefully selected and prepared egg shells. Egg shells with egg contents hanging off of them are dried indirectly (not with an open flame) to a dry matter with a percentage of 99% (min. 98%). STEGCAL is GMP-rated and so is guaranteed to be free of Salmonella.  To add force to this guarantee, STEGGCAL is first stored and tested. The lot is not cleared for transport until it has tested negative for Salmonella.

Size of particles: 1 – 2 mm

The coarse, open structure of STEGGCAL allows the chicken to selectively eat it; the amount of grit the chicken ingests depends on its calcium requirement. The size of the particles also makes it very suitable as a source of calcium for broilers. It increases the grinding function of the gizzard.

Bulk weight: 1.2 kg/litre

Colour
Depending on the eggs from which it is made, STEGGCAL is coloured like brown or white eggs or a combination thereof. No colourings are added.

Aroma
STEGGCAL has a pleasant, neutral aroma. No aromas are added.

Typical analytical values Method
Moisture 1.0% max 2% EEC L 279/8
Ash 91.2% EEC L 155/20
Raw egg white 5.9% NEN 3145
Crude fat 1.2% EEC L 15/29
Microbiological
Enterobacteriaceae max 1.000 per gram
Salmonella none in 25 grams

Application
STEGGCAL can be used in all animal feeds. A maximum of 6% is recommended for use in feed for laying hens. This is because the gizzard maintains its optimum grinding function if feed also contains limestone.

Research
Extensive practical experience has now been gained with STEGGCAL. Thousands of tons have been incorporated into feed for poultry, pigs and cattle. One pilot test with STEGGCAL was conducted by our company. Also tests have been conducted elsewhere in the world with the various substances found in eggs that positively influenced animal health. Nutritional value
STEGGCAL has nutritional value. It contains approximately 6% protein from the dried adhered egg contents and the protein structures in the shell. In addition, it also contains 1.2 % fat. The value of fat and protein is comparable to that of egg powder.
You will find an extensive matrix of STEGGCAL under this link: STEGGCAL matrix

The ash fraction of STEGGCAL consists of 98.2% calcium carbonate, 0.9% magnesium and 0.9% phosphorus. Organically formed calcium carbonate, produced by animals, i.e. possessing high bio-availability. It is important, particularly for poultry, to have an idea of the rate at which calcium is released. At the Provimi laboratory, STEGGCAL is compared with known calcium sources such as chalk, grit and limestones. A conductometric method was used. The sample is placed in a solution of 0.1 M HCl then the degree of conduction is tracked over time as a measure of the dissolution rate of the sample.

STEGGCAL is not just a source of animal-origin calcium. Because the shell and the membrane of the egg is intended to form a barrier against the dangers that can threaten the embryonic chicken, they contain substances that can protect the chicken against external threats.

Finally, STEGGCAL contains extra trace elements for laying chickens compared to standard limestone or chalk. It contains 4.0 mg/kg iron and 10.7 mg/kg zinc.
