OUR WELFARE PROGRAM
Consumers require high quality food that is safe and traceability. That necessitates a food chain that produces fair, responsible and environmental friendly. Food waste and animal welfare are therefore top priorities.
Schaffelaarbos is encouraging the ongoing improvement these topics. This is why our OVOLIN products can be produced from diverse husbandry systems. We separate Cage Free and In-Ovo eggs.
This differentiation helps our customers to choose their feed ingredients consciously.
To make sure that the Cage Free and In-Ovo supply chain of raw materials and process is fully traceable we got certified by KIWA Verin. This certification of animal welfare helps building customer confidence in a responsible agrifood system.

The Dutch House of Representatives wants to ban the killing of day-old chicks
The Dutch House of Representatives wants the killing of day-old chicks to be banned. On Tuesday 15 June, a majority of the House of Representatives supported a motion on this. Since there are currently four techniques with which the sex of a hen can already be determined in the egg, it is believed that the killing of day-old chicks the day after hatching should be banned as soon as possible. Schaffelaarbos partners with Agri Advanched Technologies GmbH (AAT)
Schaffelaarbos partners with the German company AAT GmbH, a company that developed an optical method for in ovo sex determination. The non-invasive method uses sex-specific plumage colors which are reflected in spectra recorded by a hyperspectral camera to identify the sex in the hatching egg in the second third of incubation with an accuracy of over 95%. The German company AAT offers a non-invasive in ovo sexing method with respectfull treatment of sorting out male embryos. Schaffelaarbos will further process these eggs into Dried Egg Proteins for the Animal Feed Market. The gender typing In Ovo-machine, can be seen a disruptive innovation to solve a big issue for the entire poultry sector. Each year, about 6,5 billion male chicks worldwide are culled directly after hatching because they have no economic value. This leads to growing social objections in the context of animal welfare, but until recently there were no alternatives to solve this. In Ovo...
Culling male chicks is coming to an end
Culling day old male chicks from layer breeds is much under debate in the western world. But a reliable solution is there. “In ovo sexing” has become reality and is as accurate as current manual sexing methods. The Seleggt technology is running in a robot carousel, developed by HatchTech Incubation Technology. Under the “respeggt” label, eggs which have been laid by layers which originate from this system, are available in European supermarkets. - By Ad BalThe culling of male chicks from layer breeds directly after hatch, has been common practice for decades (today 300 million in the EU alone). Not a pleasant practice though, but an alternative wasn’t there. After all, these birds have been bred for egg production, rather...
